Genghis Khan was the great leader of Mongolia. He conquered much territory during his reign, and created the largest ever empire in history. His goal was to destroy all individual tribes in Asia and turn them into one force, and it worked. In the 12th century Genghis gathered all the Mongols together for the first time, creating a unified nation. Mongolia became a country of warriors.
"With Heaven's aid I have conquered for you a huge empire. But my life was too short to achieve the conquest of the world. This task I leave for you" |
Genghis Khan died in the year 1227, in which the conquered land was divided into four kingdoms. A document containing 12 chapters of the ancient origins of Mongolia from Genghis Khan to Ugedei Khan (his son), called the Secret History of the Mongols was created in 1240, giving scholars much of the resources they have today. In the year 1271, one of Genghis descendents, Kublai Khan offically declared the Yuan Dynasty, which was the first dynasty to ever rule over all of China, but in 1368 it was overthrown by the Chinese Ming Dynasty.
Post Yuan Dynasty
Mongolia was not truly united for a long time after the Yuan Dynasty. It suffered years of internal conflict and shrunk drastically in size as a nation, and in result became very easy to conquer. This proved to be the truth in 1636 when at first Inner Mongolia was conquered and 55 years later, in 1691 Outer Mongolia was conquered as well both by the Manchu Qing Dynasty. This reign continued until 1911.
